Abstract

<div>The influence of Zn presence on degradation mechanism of Sn-based alloys was studied on naturally aged historical material. Special attention was paid to low temperature phase transformation of Sn also known as tin pest. The Zn addition to Sn-based alloys may be used in soldering materials to improve mechanical properties of the join. By means of optical and scanning electron microscopy and XRD, we have proven that it also accelerates the phase transformation. Even a low content of Pb (0.1 wt%) suppress the phase transformation of Sn. The effect of addition of both Pb and Zn was also described.</div>
