The 32nd International Conference on Metallurgy and Materials METAL 2023 took place in Brno on 17-19 May 2023. Almost 180 participants from 21 countries listened to 65 lectures and viewed 86 posters.

The conference was opened by Assoc. Prof. Christian Bernhard, a head of a steel cleanness and casting research group in Department for Metallurgy, Montanuniversität Leoben, Austria. He dedicated his lecture to the topic of Continuous Casting of Steel: Latest achievements and future challenges for research. The second plenary lecture was given by Jožef Medved, professor at the Department for Materials and Metallurgy, Faculty for Natural Science and Engineering, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. The lecture dealt with the Aluminium – Sustainable Material of Green Transition.

However, the thematic scope of the conference lectures was traditionally much broader. Researchers presented innovations not only in the fields of advanced iron, cast iron, steelmaking, non-ferrous metals and alloys, metal forming and surface engineering, but also in the economics and management of metallurgical production.

The prize for the best poster has been awarded to Alexandr Arbuz from Nazarbayev University in Temirtau (Kazakhstan). In his work, he presented FEM-Simulation of Transverse Defect Closure in Austenitic Stainless Steel by Radial Shear Rolling.

The Czech Association of Scientific and Technical Societies awards the prize for the best poster presentation in the student category to Zuzana Košelová from Institute of Scientific Instruments of the CAS, Czech Republic, for her poster on Functional Tungsten-Based Thin Films and Their Characterization.

The next 33rd METAL conference will take place on May 22 - 24, 2023.

Abstract: Small punch test is an advantageous method for evaluation of mechanical properties of components especially in cases, where it is technically difficult or even impossible to obtain enough bulk material for standard tests. Therefore, the method is very well applicable in power industry, for example in residual lifetime assessment of critical parts of components and structures after long-term operation. [..] Read more

Abstract: In this paper, the research of steel flow characteristics using three different shapes of impact pads in a 6-strands tundish is presented. The key purpose of the research presented in this paper was to improve flow characteristics and steel temperature distribution across the whole tundish inner space with the aim of preventing erosion of the refractory lining in the upper section of the inflow area. Simulations were realized for various types and shapes of impact pads. [..] Read more

Abstract: The presented research was focused to optimize the conditions in a T-shaped three-strand tundish to minimize the intermix zone during steel casting. The intermix zone occurs when different steel grades are cast in a single sequence without interruptions or restarts, resulting in mixing of old and new steel grades in the tundish and the continuous cast billet. Abstract: One of the factors influencing the surface quality of castings is the resulting thermal expansion when silica sands are used. This is characterised both by its high value compared to other non-silica sands, and by its typical discontinuous behaviour, leading in many cases to defects such as veining or increased surface roughness, which further lead to increased costs of processing the castings or, in extreme cases, to scrap pieces.
