Abstract

The production of iron in blast furnaces involves a number of entirely different processes such as: chemical, mechanical, and physical. The input materials often contain several negative elements, such as heavy metals. The typical elements of this category include lead and zinc. These elements usually enter blast furnace in the form of oxides and sulphides. Due to the physical and chemical properties of these metals, there is a cycle in blast furnaces that takes place in the lower parts with high temperatures, causing reduction and evaporation, and the upper parts of furnace stack with low temperatures, where the vapours condensate. Heavy metals can significantly influence the blast furnace process, as well as its costs. Among other aspects, they may have fundamental impact on the working life of the blast furnace lining, which is eroded due to the formation of deposits created by some heavy metals. With regard to these facts, it is important to monitor the content of heavy metals in the input raw materials, but also throughout the entire blast furnace process. The article deals with the analysis of the effect of heavy metals within the scope of the blast furnace process.
